Celebrate World Press Freedom Day 2010
On behalf of the many women without freedom of expression, speech and other rights, celebrate World Press Freedom Day this 3 May.
World Press Freedom Day is celebrated annually on 3 May to both commemorate the principles of press freedom and to pay tribute to those journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
This year’s theme is “Freedom of Information: the Right to Know.”
The goal of the day is to foster reflection and the exchange of ideas on the power of freedom of information in advancing empowerment, transparency, accountability and the fight against corruption. It will also look at the key obstacles to the effective exercise of the right to know in today’s digitalised world.
For more information and to find out how to get involved in this important cause, visit UNESCO’s website.
The importance of press freedom can never be overstated, and I urge everyone to remember and support not only UNESCO’s role as “champion of freedom of expression and the right to know,” but also the ways we can all make a difference.
