First female president of Costa Rica

In Costa Rica’s recent presidential election, 50-year-old ruling party candidate Laura Chinchilla won after first results showed she had received 47 per cent of the votes counted, way ahead of her main opponents and above the 40 per cent needed to avoid a run-off.

First female speaker in Mozambique

Mozambique is continuing to make positive strides concerning women in politics. The latest success comes from the unanimous election of Veronica Macamo,a member of the ruling FRELIMO party. She is now the first woman speaker of parliament following a swearing in ceremony in the capital Maputo.

New female troops patrol South Bengal frontier

Following heightened security measures and the high numbers of men apprehended at the border, women are being increasingly used for smuggling goods and fake currency notes. To counteract, Indian women have made history since September 2009 by holding combat positions along the country’s difficult border with Bangladesh.
